Terry Virgo
I like to keep up to date with Christian news by utilising the Premier Christianity News blog. Last week Terry Virgo, fonder of New Frontiers International was commenting on our current situation.
“My daily prayer is that God will light the flame of revival again, and awaken our indifferent culture to our vulnerability and frailty," he wrote . "Suddenly matters of life and death, possible financial disaster and loss cannot be ignored; attention is being arrested."
At this time of national emergency, Virgo encouraged Christians to "pray for nothing less than an outpouring of the Holy Spirit that will awaken the nations, so that God might do something of "extraordinary proportions." "
Now many of you will be aware of Terry Virgo, but for those who are not I would like to commend him to you. Terry was used by God as founder and leader of the New Frontiers network of churches since the 1980’s. Whenever I heard him speak it was with wisdom and sensitivity. A man much used by God and led by the Holy Spirit.
Virgo then tells about a church in Bangalore who usually get 3000 attendees, but had over 19000 online viewers last Sunday.
Nicky Gumbel
Also, following this online trend, Nicky Gumbel, founder of The Alpha Course says that at Holy Trinity Brompton they had 308 people sign up for online Alpha, just last week! This is exceptional.
Tim Keller
Tim Keller, founder of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York, and co-founder of The Gospel Coalition spoke from his New York apartment about how coronavirus will change the church. Keller said he thinks it will be hard to be a pastor when coronavirus is over, with a large percentage of the congregation out of work or having experienced devastation. "I think that almost all churches are going to be in a position where there'll be more to do but there'll be less financial resources...that's going to be a problem for ministry leaders everywhere in the world."
He compared it to the attack on the Twin Towers and the aftershock then: "After 9/11, which had a huge impact on the city in a way you didn't see in the rest of the country or the world, it took several weeks at least for us to figure out at our church 'what does this mean for us in the future?' We can't go on with business as usual. We have to find out 'what is God calling us to be?' and it can't be the same. I think that will emerge and I don't think it's easy to tell."
God is at work in the world. Is this a significant "transition moment"? What do you Pro Christians think? Please help out The Amateur Christian.
I will have much more to share on this theme shortly.
