I always wanted to be a pro. You know, the sort of person who understood it all, was in control of all the facts and could clearly and fully answer any question asked of him.
I realised when I first asked Jesus to be my saviour as a young child that I had lots to learn but I hoped that in time, along with flying a fighter jet, playing cricket for England and scoring the winning goal in a World Cup Final, I would become a Pro Christian. It didn't happen. I remained an Amateur Christian.
After leading House Groups, around 20 Alpha courses and spending numerous hours in Leadership Team and Elders Meetings. After running Training courses in church on Sharing Faith, The Bible and numerous other topics I realised that I was approaching middle age (55) and still an Amateur Christian.
So, desperate measures. I ceased working for a living, started a Bible College Course, surely that would turn me into a pro? I met and befriended Bible experts with enormous brains and listened hard to what they said. But, I remained an Amateur Christian.
One thing I discovered along the way is that God loves Amateurs. Praise God, he loves me.
